The
FIFA World Cup runners-up will attempt to go one better this summer
after coping admirably with the retirement of Zinédine Zidane to
qualify from a difficult group. France coach Raymond Domenech has opted
for continuity since the campaign in Germany two years ago, with the
absence of Zidane representing one of few personnel changes.

Coupet chance
Another,
the retirement of Fabien Barthez, has opened the door to Grégory
Coupet who, aged 35, will finally get the chance to shine at a major
tournament. The Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeper should be well-protected
by a vastly experienced back four of Willy Sagnol, Lilian Thuram,
William Gallas and Eric Abidal.

Captain Vieira
Robust
defending has been the cornerstone of Les Bleus’ recent success, as
their record of five goals conceded in 12 qualifiers suggests. The
continued presence of two of the game’s finest holding midfielders,
Patrick Vieira and Claude Makelele, certainly helps – and if the
former missed much of qualifying through injury, the latter enjoyed
more playing time than anyone. Vieira will captain France if fit.

Record scorer
Domenech
relies largely on a 4-4-2 formation, switching only occasionally to
4-2-3-1. Franck Ribéry and Florent Malouda are now fixtures on
the right and left wings and Thierry Henry is a guaranteed starter in
attack. The country’s record marksman – he went into 2008 on 44
goals, three more than Michel Platini – will be partnered either
by Nicolas Anelka, who caught the eye in 2007 and scored four times in
qualifying, or by Lyon’s exciting 20-year-old Karim Benzema.

Talented tyros
Two
more emerging talents have forced their way into contention as France’s
next generation comes to the fore. Olympique de Marseille starlet Samir
Nasri could feature in the Zidane role should Domenech opt for Henry as
a lone frontrunner, while Lyon’s left-winger Hatem Ben Arfa, 21 in
March, has made a promising start to his international career. The
versatile Sidney Govou provides useful cover.

Euro 2008: Five players to watch
Friday May 30th 2008, 1:44 am

The beaches beckon for Fabio’s boys as the best of the rest in Europe gear up for Euro 2008 across the Alps.

Batefimbi Gomis of France
Hot streak: Gomis has hit form ahead of the Euros

Here are five players who could reach the peaks this summer:

Batefimbi Gomis (France)
Nicknamed
the ‘Panther’ for his unique celebrations, Gomis made a stunning debut
for France on Tuesday night, scoring both goals against Ecuador after
coming on as a second-half substitute. Those 45 minutes convinced
Raymond Domenech to include Gomis in a 23-man squad instead of Djibril
Cisse (there was no room for David Trezeguet either). The 22-year-old
striker, who is being tracked by Roma but has also spoken of his desire
to play in England, was prolific for St. Etienne this season and has
drawn favourable comparisons to Didier Drogba. If he gets the chance to
start alongside Thierry Henry, with his pace and power this predator
could well be the surprise of the tournament. (Watch his goals in the
clip below).

Turan Arda (Turkey)
A
Galatasaray youth product, this ‘Ronaldo of the Bosphorus’ loves to run
with the ball and take on defenders. An important creative source for
Turkey, he can play down both flanks but usually features down the left
for Galatasaray. A lot is expected of the winger back in his homeland.
Still only 21.

Daniel Guiza (Spain)
The
surprise of the Spanish season, Guiza came out of nowhere to top La
Liga goal-scoring charts with a 27-goal haul with minnows Mallorca. The
striker, who comes from a humble Andalusian background, only made his
international debut at the end of last year at the age of 27.
Lethal in the area, this poacher could be most effective coming on as a
sub for a side with a strong attacking line-up.  Curiously, his
girlfriend, the topless model Nuria Bermudez, also doubles up as his
agent.

Antonio Di Natale (Italy)
A Napoli
ball-boy when Maradona graced the San Paolo, ‘Toto’ shone for Udinese
this season, captaining the side to a Uefa Cup spot. The impish
Neapolitan has a knack for scoring spectacular goals and will probably
play in an advanced role down the left with Luca Toni as the lone
striker. A new addition to the World Cup winning squad, Di Natale is
another to have burst onto the international scene late in his career.

Luka Modric (Croatia)
Extra
responsibility rests on Modric’s shoulders in the wake of Eduardo’s
injury. Tottenham’s new signing is an exceptional passer of the ball
and is given the license to attack by Niko Kovac’s deep-lying position
in midfield. Manager Slaven Bilic thinks only Kaka is a better player.
If he performs, Croatia could fulfil their tag as the tournaments dark
horses, as they are placed on the weaker side of the draw.

Germany
are the first team to qualify for the 2008 European Championships if
you don’t consider host nations Austria and Switzerland. In their
most recent qualifier - a 0-0 away draw with the Republic of Ireland -

  • Marcell Jansen (Defender, Bayern Munich, 21 year old, 18 caps)

  • Christoph Metzelder (Defender, Real Madrid, 26 year old, sold from Borussia Dortmund before this season, 35 caps)

  • Mario Gómez (Striker, Stuttgart, 22 year old, 3 caps 3 goals)
  • Kevin Kuranyi (Striker, Schalke, 25 year old, 42 caps 19 goals)

The strength of the German squad is shown by the players that didn’t play:

  • Miroslav Klose (Stiker, Bayern Munich, 29 year old, 70 caps 35 goals)
  • Lukas Podolski (Striker, Bayern Munich, 22 year old, 40 caps 23 goals)
  • Oliver Neuville (Striker, Borussia Mönchengladbach, 34 year old, 65 caps 9 goals)
  • Thomas Hitzlsperger (Midfielder, Stuttgart, 25 year old, 28 caps 3 goals)
  • Bernd Schneider (Midfielder, Bayer Leverkusen, 33 year old, 80 caps 4 goals)
  • Michael Ballack (Midfielder, Chelsea, 31 year old, 77 caps 35 goals)
  • David Odonkor (Midfielder, Real Betis, 23 year old, 12 caps 1 goal)
  • Philipp Lahm (Defender, Bayern Munich, 23 year old, 35 caps)

15 of these 19 players play in the German Bundesliga, two play in the English Premier league and two play in the Spanish La Liga.

10 of the players are 25 year old or younger. The average age against Ireland was 25,8.
