Euro 2008: Five players to watch

The beaches beckon for Fabio’s boys as the best of the rest in Europe gear up for Euro 2008 across the Alps.

Batefimbi Gomis of France
Hot streak: Gomis has hit form ahead of the Euros

Here are five players who could reach the peaks this summer:

Batefimbi Gomis (France)
Nicknamed
the ‘Panther’ for his unique celebrations, Gomis made a stunning debut
for France on Tuesday night, scoring both goals against Ecuador after
coming on as a second-half substitute. Those 45 minutes convinced
Raymond Domenech to include Gomis in a 23-man squad instead of Djibril
Cisse (there was no room for David Trezeguet either). The 22-year-old
striker, who is being tracked by Roma but has also spoken of his desire
to play in England, was prolific for St. Etienne this season and has
drawn favourable comparisons to Didier Drogba. If he gets the chance to
start alongside Thierry Henry, with his pace and power this predator
could well be the surprise of the tournament. (Watch his goals in the
clip below).

Turan Arda (Turkey)
A
Galatasaray youth product, this ‘Ronaldo of the Bosphorus’ loves to run
with the ball and take on defenders. An important creative source for
Turkey, he can play down both flanks but usually features down the left
for Galatasaray. A lot is expected of the winger back in his homeland.
Still only 21.

Daniel Guiza (Spain)
The
surprise of the Spanish season, Guiza came out of nowhere to top La
Liga goal-scoring charts with a 27-goal haul with minnows Mallorca. The
striker, who comes from a humble Andalusian background, only made his
international debut at the end of last year at the age of 27.
Lethal in the area, this poacher could be most effective coming on as a
sub for a side with a strong attacking line-up.  Curiously, his
girlfriend, the topless model Nuria Bermudez, also doubles up as his
agent.

Antonio Di Natale (Italy)
A Napoli
ball-boy when Maradona graced the San Paolo, ‘Toto’ shone for Udinese
this season, captaining the side to a Uefa Cup spot. The impish
Neapolitan has a knack for scoring spectacular goals and will probably
play in an advanced role down the left with Luca Toni as the lone
striker. A new addition to the World Cup winning squad, Di Natale is
another to have burst onto the international scene late in his career.

Luka Modric (Croatia)
Extra
responsibility rests on Modric’s shoulders in the wake of Eduardo’s
injury. Tottenham’s new signing is an exceptional passer of the ball
and is given the license to attack by Niko Kovac’s deep-lying position
in midfield. Manager Slaven Bilic thinks only Kaka is a better player.
If he performs, Croatia could fulfil their tag as the tournaments dark
horses, as they are placed on the weaker side of the draw.
